About Computing Services:

The Computing Services Department is charged with the duty of planning, implementing and maintaining the university ICT infrastructure and services.

ICTs continue to play a more predominant role in the operations of organizations.

For many universities, including Mbarara University of Science and Technology, a lot of the critical business operations are not just supported but strongly hinged on ICTs and related technologies. Computing devices and infrastructure can no longer be seen as tools to support basic administrative functions but are rather are the core of many critical processes.

In the case of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, there is reliance, on ICTs, to achieve the following business processes.

  • Student academic and finance records processing
  • Financial payments and reporting
  • Teaching and learning
  • Research and Science communication
  • Internal communication
  • Visibility
  • Administration

Duties & Responsibilities

The department is mandated to provide the following ICT infrastructure and services to the MUST community

ICT Strategic Planning: ICT is seen as a key driver towards the university’s growth and excellence. ICT plays a critical role in enabling key university academic, research, administrative and community engagement operations.

The department maps out strategies and activities to ensure that the university remains relevant in this age of technological dominion.

ICT Policy Framework: Reliance on ICT technologies and tools requires that they be used within controlled mechanisms. The department spearheads the engagement on, preparation and approval of all ICT-related policies in the university.

Network Backbone: The department runs and manages optic fiber network backbones at both the Mbarara town and Kihumuro campuses. These backbones provide segmented internet access to most university buildings

ICT Services/Application Hosting: With 2 data centers at either campuses, department provides facilities for hosting and storing data while ensuring logical access through technology standards. It is also a basis for hosting a wide range of shared applications for staff and students to access.

Staff/Student ICT Support: The department provides managed support mechanisms for both staff and students in their use and acquisition of ICT devices, applications and tools

Web Services: The department provides facilities both on the university network and in the cloud, to run web communication services on behalf of the university. A number of digital content platforms are in place to support the university’s communication strategy.

Staff/ Student Mailing Service; All staff and students are provided official university mail accounts in alignment with the university’s official web domain- must.ac.ug

Staff/ Student Wireless Internet; The service under the profile ‘EDUROAM’, allows access to the university Local Area Network and internet services using Laptops and Mobile Devices like Smartphones and Tablets. This service is accessible in designated hot spots at both the Kihumuro and City campus; at other designated universities in and outside Uganda and selected public places in Mbarara, Kampala and Entebbe.

Student Computer Labs/Rooms; All faculties/Institutes have designated computer rooms for students that do not own personal computing devices. In the university library, computers are available for purposes of searching online academic journals and library databases.

Students’ Academic Records Portal; The service running on the Web platform https://student.must.ac.ug and also on selected Android mobile applications, allows students to access their academic records/results, view fees payment status as well as register for courses as per their University program.

eLearning; a Learning Management System running on the web platform https://elearning.must.ac.ug provides for interactive engagement between lecturers and students to share academic material and content for purposes of study over the internet. The platform also provides facility for online class discussion as well as assessment.

 

In addition, the department runs a fully-fledged digital content studio to support staff and students in development of educational digital content while being supported in key aspects of digital pedagogy, instructional design and content development.
