Succeed We Must

Dr. Nuwagira’s quest for a Cure

Dr. Edwin Nuwagira, from the faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, is a leading figure in post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD) research. He has embarked on a new chapter in his quest to improve the lives of Ugandans. With the recent award of the K43 grant for his project, “Improving Diagnostic Strategies for Post-Tuberculosis Lung Disease in Ugandan Primary Healthcare Settings” Dr. Nuwagira is determined to make significant strides in early detection and management of PTLD, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Since 2017, Dr. Nuwagira has been at the forefront of PTLD research, building on a foundation of previous grants and fellowships. His journey, marked by determination and innovation, has led him to this pivotal moment. Under the mentorship of Dr. Peggy Lai from Harvard/MGH and Dr. Conrad Muzoora from MUST, Dr. Nuwagira will develop and validate a clinical diagnostic algorithm to identify patients with PTLD based on easily accessible clinical and demographic information.
By integrating this algorithm into primary healthcare settings, Dr. Nuwagira aims to empower healthcare providers to detect PTLD early, facilitating timely referrals and treatment. His research will also look at the challenges and opportunities faced by clinicians in diagnosing PTLD through in-depth interviews. This holistic approach promises to revolutionize the care of patients with PTLD in Uganda and beyond.
Congratulations Dr. Nuwagira, your commitment and dedication to improving the lives of Ugandans through your research on Post-Tuberculosis Lung Disease is truly inspiring. This K43 grant, a prestigious junior faculty award, is a significant milestone in your career. It serves as a powerful launchpad for even greater achievements in research.
As the University motto rightly states, “Succeed we MUST,” and you have undoubtedly proven this with your remarkable accomplishments. This K43 is not only a recognition of your talent but also a depiction of your potential to secure larger grants in the future. Your groundbreaking work has shattered the notion that the sky is the limit. You have reached for the stars and brought them closer to Earth.
Well done!
