As it happened: MUST 28th graduation ceremony!

Mbarara University graduates urged to embrace 21st Century competencies.

“Be admirable ambassadors, uphold integrity, 21st century requires competent, innovative, creative, skillful and communication strategists. Be job creators and transform knowledge into practice to remain attractive in the job market” said Minister of State for Primary Education.

The Minister of State for Primary Education and Mbarara University Alumnus, Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu said the Government noted Mbarara University’s contributions to the community through research, innovation and publication. The Minister also noted that, the government through the Ministry of ICT and Innovation has supported real time innovations at Mbarara University particularly, the Faculty of Computing and Informatics that provide solutions in the 4th   technological generation.

Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu said, the Ministry of Education and Sports shall workout a mechanism with Ministry of Health to support Photo Kabada Project that has been developed in the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology into a commercial product that can be deployed in all health facilities.

She congratulated all graduands for braving the challenging times of the covid-19 pandemic to reach this day. She also extended her appreciation to everyone that supported the graduands especially the parents, guardians, sponsors and university staff.

Mbarara University of Science and Technology held her 28th graduation ceremony on 28th May 2022 where 1,319 graduated with diplomas, degrees, masters and PhDs which is the highest number compared to 1,269 on the 27th graduation. On the same graduation, 199 graduated with Masters and 29 with PhDs of which 7 PhD graduates conducted research in herbal medicine.

The Chancellor Prof. Charles Olweny thanked the President of Uganda H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for the continued support towards promoting Science and Technology Programmes. This in the long run has encouraged research and innovation at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. He said the University now boasts of being one of the best government Universities in Uganda according to the recent National Council for High Education ranking.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Celestino Obua requested the government to consider promotions in academic institutions. He said, the University has had teaching staff who have worked hard to attain higher academic credentials for promotion but have stayed in the same position causing demotivation and frustration which affects quality of higher education.

Today you join the alumni family, those who have gone before have held the MUST flag high at the national and international level. With the knowledge and skills acquired at MUST, they make the best of the world they serve. I trust you will also do the same. Prof. Obua told graduates.

Quick facts about 28th graduation

29 graduated with PhDs which is an increment from 24 at the 27th, 10 members of staff obtained PhDs and 7 conducted research in herbal medicine.

60 obtained First Class Degrees with Bachelor of Science Program obtaining the highest number (14) followed by Bachelor of Petroleum Engineering and Environmental Management (10) and Bachelor of Business Administration (8). The overall best student obtained CGPA of 4.9 out of 5 which is one of the best performances in MUST history.
