Master of Science in Health Information Technology (MSc. HIT)

AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) (www.amia.org) defines Health information technology  as an‘ interdisciplinary field that studies and pursues the effective uses of biomedical and healthcare data, information, and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving, and decision making, driven by efforts to improve healthcare services delivery, management and planning’. The MSc HIT is a two year modular programme that will runs in weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). The programme is hosted by the Department of Information Technology and Systems, and taught by staff from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, and Faculty of Medicine. Additionally, staff from industry provides guest lectures to help students visualize the applicability of classroom concepts in the real life of health informatics.

 Why MSc HIT?

  • Uganda lacks professionals with knowledge and skills in both healthcare and computing (commonly known as health Informaticians). There are many healthcare challenges in Uganda such as shortage of healthcare professionals; poor storage, accessibility and management of patient information; loss of patient follow-ups; and drug inventory and accountability challenges, all of which can be minimized by having professionals with knowledge and skills in health informatics.
  • Health information technology innovations have a proven role at improving healthcare delivery effectiveness and efficiency, as manifested by great advances in the developed world. However, few of these technologies have had an impact in Uganda, mainly due to lack of trained professionals to develop, implement and evaluate them.

Programme Objectives

The programme aims to:

  1. Develop professionals with advanced knowledge and skills to design, develop, implement, evaluate, and strategically manage health informatics interventions.
  2. Build capacity in generation, storage, retrieval, use, share and manage health data, information, and knowledge to support appropriate decision-making and evidence based practice
  3. Create a pool of health informaticians with advanced skills to model, simulate, secure, manage knowledge, visualize, extract useful patterns, and make healthcare decisions.
  4. Develop research-oriented individuals who can apply their knowledge and skills to carry out research in business informatics.

 Learning Outcomes

After successfully completion of this programme, students will be able to:

  1. Develop and deploy secure health information technology applications such as clinical decision support systems, and mobile health applications.
  2. Plan and manage health-related projects
  3. Model, simulate and extract meaningful patterns in healthcare data.
  4. Carry out research in health informatics.

Job prospects

Health informatics is a growing field with excellent career prospects due to the complex nature of the health industry. Health informatics specialists work in a variety of environments, including hospitals, clinics, healthcare and insurance agencies, medical information technology firms, research institutes, and universities. Graduates of the programme pursue successful careers in the health service (both govenrment and private sectors in Uganda and overseas) and in related healthcare industries and organisations. Computing projects in the health care field require people with a solid understanding of both the needs of the medical sector and the strengths and limitations of technology. The health informaticians’ unique interdisciplinary expertise makes them particularly suited to assume a coordinating and bridging role between these two areas. Common roles include are health database managers, project coordinators,  application experts, network administrators, requirement analysts, system specialists, system developers, designers, evaluators, researchers, educators. 

Admission Requirement

The Health information technology programme is designed around a range of learning pathways to meet the needs of students from health care/computing-related backgrounds.  To qualify for admission, a candidate must fulfil the general Mbarara University of Science and Technology entry requirements for Master’s degrees. In addition the candidate must be a holder of either;

  • At least a Second Upper Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Information Technology/Systems-related programmes such as computer science, information technology/systems, Computer/Software Engineering, Business computing, or any other STEM-related Degree from a recognised Higher Institution of Learning.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in health-related programmes such as medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy, from a recognised Higher Institution of Learning.
  • At least a Second Upper (if classified) Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science and Information Technology/Systems-related programmes, or health-related programmes from a recognized Higher Institution of Learning

Tuition fees

The MSc. HIT is a privately sponsored programme and therefore before enrollment it is important that tuition fees are paid by the students to the university. Ugandan students will pay tuition fees totaling to Four Million and Eight Hundred thousand shillings (4,800,000= Ug. shs.) per year, plus 350,000= for practicum for in second year. Foreign students will pay an equivalent tuition fees and practicum fees in USD.
